Teachers workshop 3 days, 5-7 june 2021
Teachers Workshop- The summer edition, first time in history!
When the sun never really sets and you can hardly tell if it is daytime or night time. Come and celebrate the dancers who where a part of creating this dance we call Lindy Hop together with a small celebration of the Swedish National day. Welcome to the very northern parts of Sweden, not far away from the Polar Circle. A workshop for Lindy Hop teachers who want to work more in the tradition of "the old school Lindy Hop" where we put a lot of emphasis on what we have learnt from original dancers like Frankie Manning, Norma Miller and Al Minns. These dancers are our biggest source of information and inspiration who we have all worked and danced with, direct or indirect. Frankie Manning is the one dancer that we worked more closely to than any other dancer of the original dancers and Åsa even had the opportunity to teach together with Frankie for some years in the 1990's. This workshop will focus on making you grow as a teacher, partly by creating a deeper understanding of the history of Lindy Hop but also to give you useful tools and exercises to develop as a teacher from a pedagogical perspective. With 27 years of experience from teaching the Lindy Hop we will try to share some of our most useful experiences and advices to not make the most common mistakes that most teachers (including ourselves) has gone through. It will be a small workshop so that we will have time to work with each and everyone on an individual level. Maximum 12 Couples. |
Focus for the weekend
During those 3 days we will work on (this might change a bit depending on the actual group that we will have here to work with):
- How do we pass on Lindy Hop in the society of today but still trying to stay true to the history of the dance?
- How to build a curriculum but foremost: we will pass on what we would consider a curriculum in Lindy Hop based on what we learnt from Frankie Manning and Al Minns.
- How to build a good partnership together with your teaching partner.
Also, althrough the weekend below subjects will be present and represented:
- Back To The Roots - A weekend where we want to strengthen your root system. Your Lindy Hop roots.
- Individual Feedback - We choose to keep the workshop small so that we will have time to work with each and every one individually, to give personal feedback on both your own dancing but also on your teaching skills.
- Musicality - We are going to work from a rhythmical aspect in most things that we do. We are going to work with scatting, footwork and a free rhythmical improvisation.
- Teaching Aspects - Develop as a Lindy Hop teacher by working on different aspects of teaching, such as suitable material for beginners, how to plan a class, attitudes during class or how to work with concepts rather than only figures and technique.

Practicalities
We will live in a small village called Måttsund, not far away from Luleå Airport. We will dance, sleep and eat at the same location through out the whole weekend. In the surroundings you will find some real beautiful nature to go hiking in, just taking a short walk or, if the weather allows, have some of our classes or meals in.
Here is a link with some beautiful pictures of the Måttsund village. Day time activities - Minimum of 15 hours of classes including personal feedback - Discussion sessions - Assignments Evening activities depending on weather: - Social dance - Barbecue at the beach - Movie night with vintage clips, discussions and talks Additional activity for the 8th of June Prolong your visit with one extra day and come join us at a small summer paradise, close to Luleå Airport, just by the sea. Here you can chop firewood and make a fire to grill some fresh fish, take a swim in the refreshing sea and then jump straight in to a sauna which is located on a raft straight out on the sea. If the weather allows you can also go on a 1,5 hour trip out on the archipelago on a small boat trip. Or if you prefer you can just have peaceful row in one of the rowing boats. There will be a limited amount of people who can join on this activity, first come first serve. So please tell us as soon as you know so we can book a space for you. |
